Public Opinion Strategies provides the strategic information that gives our clients a WINNING edge. In the last four election cycles, Public Opinion Strategies has helped elect over 50 new members of the U.S. House, more than any other polling firm, Democrat or Republican. According to the trade publication Campaigns and Elections, Public Opinion Strategies has the best won-lost record of any polling firm on either side of the aisle.
This makes us the largest Republican polling firm in the country. Our political client base includes 18 U.S. Senators, eight Governors, more than 50 Members of Congress, and numerous state legislative caucuses.
We don't take credit for these victories, but we DO feel we help make a difference for the campaigns we are involved in by providing accurate numbers and solid advice.
We were honored to be named "Pollsters of the Year" by the American Association of Political Consultants for the 2002 election cycle. In addition, we were dubbed a "Campaign Winner" by Campaigns and Elections Magazine for the sixth election cycle in a row.
And, the National Journal magazine noted that. . .
"Public Opinion Strategies, the Alexandria, VA.-based Republican polling firm, easily turned in the best performance of the major political consulting firms during Election 2002… Public Opinion Strategies' success is also notable because the firm had taken on some of the biggest, toughest races in the country."
-- National Journal, 11/9/02
Recent top races include:
2006
- Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee, who came from behind to defeat the Democratic Party's Dream Candidate, Harold Ford, Jr.
- Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who is the first Independent candidate elected outright to the U.S. Senate since 1976.
- Senator John Ensign of Nevada, a member of the Republican Senate leadership team.
- Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine, who bucked Republican problems in the Northeast with a landslide win.
- Governor Jim Gibbons of Nevada, one of only three new GOP Governors in the country.
2004
- Senator John Thune of South Dakota, who defeated Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in the Senate race of the Century.
- Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, the first Republican elected to the Senate since Reconstruction. Vitter won outright in a four way race, avoiding a December run-off.
- Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, who won a come-from-behind victory over Bill Clinton’s former Chief of Staff, Erskine Bowles.
- Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, who was written off by pundits in both the primary and the general election.
- Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana, who defeated incumbent Governor Joe Kernan.
2002
- Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who stunned the pundits and came from behind to defeat incumbent Max Cleland.
- Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota, who won a race experts had written off when Walter Mondale took the late Senator Wellstone's place on the ballot.
- Governor Jeb Bush of Florida, who won a resounding victory despite being Terry McAuliffe's top target. Bush is the first GOP Governor ever re-elected in Florida.
- Governor Jim Douglas of Vermont, the first Republican to win that office since 1990.
Public Opinion Strategies polled for 24 of the 69 new Republican Members of Congress elected since 2002, including five freshmen in 2006:
- Michele Bachman, MN
- Vern Buchanan, FL
- David Davis, TN
- Peter Roskam, IL
- Adrian Smith, NE
Moreover, more than one-third of the GOP women elected to the House of Representatives as freshmen over the past five election cycles are Public Opinion Strategies clients, and three of these women took over Democratic seats:
Class of 2006: |
Michele Bachmann, MN-06 |
Class of 2002: |
Candice Miller, MI-10 |
Class of 2000: |

The campaigns of these women illustrate the ways in which POS utilizes research to provide actionable data to help our clients win the tough races.
Our firm does not just begin assisting campaigns at the Congressional level. In fact, we have been working with many of our clients from their days serving on city councils, in state legislatures. The same skills that make us successful in statewide and Congressional campaigns translate into victories for our clients in critical down- ballot races from Attorney General or Supreme Court Justice to Mayor.
Public Opinion Strategies has polled for legislative caucuses and candidates in 35 states, completing nearly 2,000 separate surveys and more than 625,000 interviews on behalf of state legislative candidates and committees. A few of our recent efforts at the state legislative level include:
- Alabama State Senate and State House
- California State Senate and State Assembly
- Connecticut State Senate
- Florida State Senate and State House
- Georgia State Senate and State House
- Illinois State Senate
- Minnesota Independent Republican Caucus
- Missouri State House
- New York State Senate
- North Carolina State House
- Ohio State House and State Senate
- Oklahoma State Senate
- Pennsylvania State Senate and State House
- South Carolina State Senate
- Tennessee State House and State Senate
- Washington State Senate
- Virginia House of Delegates

In addition, we are proud of the record we have established in initiative campaigns at the state, regional and local level. With two offices in the western United States, this is an increasingly important area of expertise in our political campaign research - from local school bond initiatives to multi-million dollar statewide ballot measures. For example, no other polling firm in the country has more experience or seen more success in stadium and sports-related research.
