Growth
and development issues:
- In the summer of 2002, Public Opinion Strategies polled
for Colorado's Durango Mountain Resort (DMR), which won
a controversial initiative to follow through on a development
expansion near the ski resort. The issue secured 57% of
the vote, one point lower than our prediction of 58% based
on our last survey two weeks out. Development initiatives
are difficult enough to pass, much less in a county where
growth & development was named the most important problem
even after disastrous fires in the area. Public Opinion
Strategies' surveys included extensive message testing which
helped focus DMR on what messages they should be communicating,
and what areas of the county (rural) and types of voters
(Republican) they should be focusing on for GOTV and communication
in the final days of the campaign.
