Public Opinion Strategies Congratulates Primary Winners

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (June 5, 2002) - Public Opinion Strategies, recently described as the "leading Republican polling company" by The New York Times, continues to help Republican candidates to victory, going undefeated with a perfect 7-0 in yesterday's primaries.

In the open-seat race to replace Congressman Sonny Callahan in Alabama's First Congressional District, Callahan's former chief of staff and POS client Jo Bonner will go to the run-off against Tom Young. The final pre-primary survey showed Bonner leading Young by a two-to-one margin, and Bonner beat Young 40%-20% in the seven candidate primary.

In Iowa, Congressman Greg Ganske withstood a tough challenge to emerge as the Republican nominee against Senator Tom Harkin. In Iowa's Fifth Congressional District, John Redwine came in second in the primary, but since no candidate received the necessary 35%, the nominee is decided by a convention.

In New Jersey, Senate candidate Doug Forrester won a three-way primary with 44% of the vote to earn the right to challenge Senator Bob Torricelli. Also in New Jersey's Fifth Congressional District, state Assemblyman Scott Garrett won with a convincing 45% of the vote in a tough five-way primary for this open-seat, while being outspent by his main opponent by a two-to-one margin..

State Representative John Sanchez won New Mexico's three-way Gubernatorial primary with 58% of the vote, by defeating the sitting Lieutenant Governor Walter Bradley. Sanchez, one of the rising stars of the Republican Party, has a history of upset victories. He defeated the New Mexico Speaker of the House, a 30-year incumbent, in 2000, and started the gubernatorial race ten points behind, but the last survey showed him with an eighteen-point lead that was growing. Sanchez looks forward to continuing the come-from-behind trend against Bill Richardson in the fall.

Another POS client, Governor Bill Janklow, won the Republican nomination for South Dakota's At-Large seat, defeating former Congressman and Senator Larry Pressler by a strong 55%-27% margin.

Public Opinion Strategies would like to congratulate all these candidates and wishes them the best in November. Public Opinion Strategies is a Virginia-based Republican survey research firm that does work for eight Republican governors, eleven U.S. senators and forty-six Congressmen, as well as numerous state legislative caucuses and campaigns, throughout the country.
