PUBLIC OPINION STRATEGIES POLLS FOR
FOUR SENATE TAKE-AWAYS, EIGHT SENATORS OVERALL, SIX NEW MEMBERS
OF THE HOUSE
The Republican polling firm of Public Opinion Strategies
(POS) polled for four Republican takeovers in the U.S. Senate,
one new Governor, and six new members of Congress. Overall,
the firm polled for eight winning U.S. Senate races, three
GOP Governors elected last night, 54 Members of Congress,
as well as numerous downticket statewide and legislative winners.
Public Opinion Strategies was also part of the Bush-Cheney
‘04 polling team.
Major statewide winners were:
- Senator-elect John Thune of South Dakota,
who defeated Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in the Senate
race of the Century.
- Senator-elect David Vitter of Louisiana,
the first Republican elected to the Senate since Reconstruction.
Vitter won outright in a four way race, avoiding a December
run-off.
- Senator-elect Richard Burr of North Carolina,
who won a come-from-behind victory over Bill Clinton’s
former Chief of Staff, Erskine Bowles.
- Senator-elect Jim DeMint of South Carolina,
who was written off by pundits in both the primary and the
general election.
- Senators Jim Bunning of Kentucky, Mike
Crapo of Idaho, John McCain of Arizona, and Arlen Specter
of Pennsylvania.
- Governor-elect Mitch Daniels of Indiana,
who defeated incumbent Governor Joe Kernan.
- Governors Jim Douglas of Vermont and John
Hoeven of North Dakota.
New members of Congress that Public Opinion Strategies polled
for include Tom Price (GA-6), Lynn Westmoreland (GA-8), Jeff
Fortenberry (NE-1), Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8), Dave Reichert
(WA-8) and Charles Boustany (LA-7)..
Other statewide winners include Attorney General-elect Steve
Carter of Indiana, Auditor-elect Randy Brock of Vermont, three
Supreme Court Justices in Nevada, and three Supreme Court
Justices in Ohio.
POS also polled for successful state legislative efforts
in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia (where Republicans
took control of the state House), Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts,
Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
South Carolina, Tennessee (where Republicans took control
of the state Senate) and Wisconsin.
POS also polled for twenty-two winning ballot issues, including
the new stadium in Arlington, TX for the Dallas Cowboys, the
Defense of Marriage Amendments in two key states – Ohio
and Michigan, as well as three key amendments in Nevada versus
the trial lawyers lobby. In California we helped defeat Prop
66, which was an attempt to water down the three strikes law.
These great results builds upon our 2002 successes, when
POS polled for three Senate take-aways (Norm Coleman, Saxby
Chambliss, and John Sununu), five new Governors, and ten new
members of the House.
POS is pleased to have played a role in this historic 2004
election, and wishes to congratulate the architects of the
Republican victory: President George W. Bush, Senators Bill
Frist and George Allen, and Congressmen Tom Reynolds and Tom
DeLay, and their staffs.
