WASHINGTON, D.C. - Public Opinion Strategies congratulates Danny Jones on his hard-fought victory to become the newly-elected Mayor of Charleston, West Virginia. Republican Danny Jones soundly defeated Democrat Chris Smith in a city where there are twice as many registered Democrats as there are registered Republicans. Many political pundits had predicted an easy victory for Smith, who, just two months ago, had defeated the incumbent mayor by 24 points in the March Democratic primary.

"The days of West Virginia being a Democratic stronghold are long gone. Jones’ success shows that having the better candidate and running the better campaign makes all the difference," stated Rob Autry, pollster for the Jones campaign and Vice President at Public Opinion Strategies. "This victory is a big win for all West Virginia Republicans and clearly gives the party a psychological boost heading into the 2004 elections."

Public Opinion Strategies, the Alexandria-based polling firm that conducting survey research for the Danny Jones campaign, had Jones leading by nine points with just two weeks to go in the campaign and showed the momentum was swinging in his favor. Final results show Jones winning 57% of the vote compared to Smith’s 43%.

Public Opinion Strategies was recently honored with the 2002 "Pollster of the Year" award from the American Association of Political Consultants. Danny Jones’ win becomes the fourth consecutive victorious campaign that Public Opinion Strategies has polled for in West Virginia over the last three years.
