PUBLIC OPINION STRATEGIES POLLS FOR THREE SENATE TAKE-AWAYS, FIVE NEW GOVERNORS, AND TEN NEW MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE

The Republican polling firm of Public Opinion Strategies (POS) polled for three Republican takeovers in the U.S. Senate, five new Governors, and ten new members of Congress. Overall, the firm polled for six winning U.S. Senate races, nine of the 21 GOP Governors elected last night, 54 Members of Congress, as well as numerous downticket statewide and legislative winners.

Major statewide winners were:

  • Senator-elect Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who stunned the pundits and came from behind to defeat incumbent Max Cleland.
  • Senator-elect Norm Coleman of Minnesota, who won a race that pundits had written off just one week ago.
  • Senator-elect John Sununu of New Hampshire. The firm did the tracking for the NRSC, which showed Sununu's come-from-behind victory.
  • Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico and Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.
  • Governor-elect Bob Ehrlich of Maryland, who is the first Republican to win that office since 1966.
  • Governor-elect Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, who beat a popular female opponent who had previously been elected to statewide office in the Commonwealth.
  • Governor-elect Craig Benson of New Hampshire, who led the GOP sweep in the state, recapturing that office for the first time since 1996.
  • Governor-elect Mike Rounds of South Dakota, who confounded the pundits by winning his primary and general election by never running a single negative ad.
  • Governor-elect Jim Douglas of Vermont, the first GOPer to win that office since 1990.*
  • Governors John Rowland of Connecticut, Kenny Guinn of Nevada, and Bob Taft of Ohio.
  • Governor Jeb Bush of Florida, who won a resounding victory despite being Terry McAuliffe's top target. Bush is the first GOP Governor ever re-elected in Florida.

Eight of the ten new Republican members of Congress that Public Opinion Strategies polled for were top targeted seats for the Democrats. New members of Congress that Public Opinion Strategies polled for include Jo Bonner (AL-1), Rick Renzi (AZ-1), Candice Miller (MI-10), Thaddeus McCotter (MI-11), Jon Porter (NV-3), Scott Garrett (NJ-5), Mike Turner (OH-3), Jim Gerlach (PA-6), Tim Murphy (PA-18), and Bill Janklow (SD AL).

Other statewide winners include Attorney General victors in Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, South Dakota, as well as the state Treasurer and two state Supreme Court races in Ohio, the Lieutenant Governor in Nevada, four statewide races in Indiana, and the state Agriculture Commissioner in Florida.

POS also polled for successful state legislative efforts in California, Florida, Georgia (where Republicans are on the cusp of controlling the state Senate), Illinois, Michigan, Missouri (where Republicans won the House), Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. POS polled for the Republican who defeated the long-time Speaker of the House in Georgia.

Public Opinion Strategies started out the cycle well, polling for the GOP pick-up in the Virginia CD-4 special election, and we'll end it well, polling for what we hope will be Lee Fletcher's victory in the December 7th run-off election in Louisiana's 5th Congressional District

POS is pleased to have played a role in this historic mid-term election, and wishes to congratulate the architects of the Republican victory: President George W. Bush, Senator Bill Frist, Congressman Tom Davis and their staffs.
